The demand for more cyber security learning spaces prompted Illinois State University to covert a lower lever parking deck into an addition to this mid-century campus building. HDG redesigned the site to include a new lower level entry plaza and renovated the other building entries and overall perimeter landscape for the building. Brick seat walls, site furnishings, and paver terraces create welcoming entry courts on multiple floors that double as outdoor gathering spaces. Quality plant material on site was retained, and a series of dry steam bed swales were designed to enhance site drainage and planted with low-maintenance species providing a high degree of multi-seasonal interest. All improvements had to be constructed while the balance of the building remained accessible and operational.
