Dig in to the full landscape of our business, including our latest projects, awards, events, community service projects, and more.
Oh, boy! This is big...
Last week, Project Designer Kendra Teune and Principal Alex Fenech were honored to celebrate with our clients Tishman and their design partners, as they broke ground on the new, 2.8-acre Dolphin Convention Center Expansion project at the Walt Disney World Resort.
The project adds 150,000sf of meeting space and cutting-edge technology to supplement its already impressive hotel, conference, and exhibit hall offerings at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort. Hitchcock Design Group developed a complex hardscape and landscape strategy inspired by and respectful of the iconic Michael Graves architecture. An intricate network of stairs, ramps, and retaining walls provides several breakout terraces for meeting space guests at the different points of entry around the building. The use of native plants to the Central Florida region provides shade, seasonal color, and low maintenance alternatives for the exterior guest spaces. When complete, the resort will boast one of the largest hotel and convention spaces in the nation.
HDG is thrilled to be collaborating with HKS Architects DeSimone Consulting Engineers LandDesign, Inc. KCBO and the rest of the consultant team to help bring this project to life.
HDG leads the site planning and landscape architecture for the project and will provide full design and construction administration services once complete. This milestone is especially significant for Hitchcock Design Group as this is the first project to break ground for our South Florida studio. The project is expected to open in Fall of 2026. Congratulations to all, and stay tuned!

This past weekend, Senior Associate Aaron Elswick joined other members of ASLA Florida Chapter on a "wet walk" tour of Big Cypress National Preserve in the swamps of the Florida Everglades.
"It’s hard to put into words how exciting, beautiful, and enlightening the experience was. The first step to becoming a more sustainable designer is to deeply study nature. So get out there!" It's a great reminder to all of us. Just remember to watch where you step!

The expansion of Chicago's Malcolm X College West Campus will include a 3,000-square-foot Community Center for Training and Learning, which would increase student capacity on the satellite campus by 50%, while also serving as an events space.
As HDG Design Principal Dave Frigo expands, "the new campus will be a great community asset when completed, even for those who might never formally take a class there."

Last weekend, ILASLA hosted a tour of Big Marsh to dig into the topics of urban forestry, land conservation, tree and plant biomass conservation, and restored/preserved prairies. HDG Principal and project landscape architect Joel Baldin provided context, insight, and led a group tour.
After the Chicago Park District acquired the nearly 300-acre brownfield site from the City of Chicago, they turned to Hitchcock Design Group to develop a site master plan. Numerous eco-recreation opportunities were planned for the site with a focus on the development of the premier regional bike park in the Midwest. Since then, HDG has led multi-disciplinary teams to prepare construction documents for multiple phases. Phase One included environmental remediation, a new entry drive, parking lot, event space, a trail system with overlooks, and a bike park. The most recent phase included the construction of a 3-mile trail network, entry plaza, pavilion, overlook, a campground, and a bridge connecting the trail system. The master plan was recently updated as well.

Pro tip: HDG Design Principal Andy Howard brought his unique insights, years of experience and infectiously corny sense of humor to his discussion about the challenges and solutions to designing for pickleball in his talk at the Indiana Parks and Recreation Conference.

The student chapter of ILASLA at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, along with the ILASLA Executive Committee, have invited Chicagoland firms to participate in a professional development event, Job Shadow Day. Having that the Naperville office compromises of a couple of UIUC alumni, we were thrilled to host UIUC Student Johanna Gonzalez, a Junior from the Landscape Architecture Department. We warmly welcomed Johanna with an office tour and introductions to our office members. In-between exploring the office and discussing the various projects we handle; we enjoyed a lunch and went for a stroll around Downtown Naperville. This collaboration was a fantastic opportunity to share our passion for Landscape Architecture while allowing us to support the next generation of designers. We hope Johanna left inspired and we wish her good luck on finishing studio reviews this fall semester!
